    Scholarships

    We award scholarships for incoming first-year students, as well as current students with a declared major in either journalism, digital media arts or strategic communication.

    Father James Whalen Endowed Scholarship

    This $2,000 scholarship is for incoming first-year students who plan to major in journalism, digital media arts or strategic communication at St. Thomas. We award this based on their commitment to community service and career-related activities, academic merit and the promise of success in a communication career.

    Application Deadline: March 6, 2025

    ThreeSixty Journalism Scholarship

    The university awards one renewable, full-tuition scholarship each year to a first-year student who completed a ThreeSixty Journalism summer camp and intends to study journalism. Candidates who will contribute diversity to St. Thomas and the department are given preference as well.

    Whalen, Leyden, Vachon and Minnesota Journalist Abroad Scholarships

    These scholarships are for current majors in journalism, digital media arts or strategic communication. These scholarships typically range from $600 to $3,000.

    TommieMedia

    The student-run news outlet for the university. It is a national leader in all-digital college journalism.

    The year JOUR 480 – Media Ethics began. It is the second-oldest required ethics course in the nation.

    Over 85 percent of journalism majors complete at least one internship before graduation.

    Pulitzer Prize Winners

    We have two alumni who have won the Pulitzer Prize in the last five years: Jeremy Olson '94 and Art Cullen '79.
